Saga
Vikings Group Inc is a Historic re-enactment group based in Petrie, Brisbane.
Since 1995 the group has provided the community with a fun and recreational
way to discover an exciting heritage common to many Australians of European
background.

Well,
the Vikings "influenced" many countries in Europe. They even
settled in Sicily (yea, we have a Don in the Club), they created a town
now called Dublin and even settled as far as in Israel. We know of how
they settled in Iceland, Greenland and North America and started a Russian
Kingdom. Britain didn't manage to fight off the Vikings until after hundreds
of thousands of Vikings had settled in England. So the heritage encompasses
much more than just the Scandinavian lands.
The
group re-lives all aspects of the Viking period like social activities,
crafts (leather, wood, metal and weapons, bone carving, striking of coins,
jewellery making, weaving, etc), daily common activities and combat re-enactment.

The club recognises and respects the Viking mythology of Odin, Thor, Freya,
Baldur, Valkyries, Valhalla, Asgård, Idavall and all of the Viking
Sagas.
In
recent times, a tidal wave of interest in Viking age and Medieval Age
living has swept over England, Scandinavia, US and Australia. Official
recognition of Vikings discovering North America was given by the US President
1995, proclaiming the 9th October Leif Eriksson Day. See President Bill
Clintons Proclamation for Viking recognition. The ship building and crafts
brought to England by hundreds of thousands of Vikings who settled on
the British Isles one such Viking Settlement became the city of Dublin.
This heritage is very relevant to many Australians of today, especially
those searching for their ancestorial roots.

The
level of interest here is obvious from events like the annual Abbey Museum
Medieval Fayre, the Brisbane annual Medieval Fayre or The Viking Village
Fayre, held by Saga Vikings in May 1997, May 1998 Aug 1999 and our Medieval
Games 2000, where all groups and public are welcome.
Since
1996, the club has been re-enacting Viking History at the big Armidale
Viking bi-annual re-enactment in NSW, Exhibitions at the Redcliffe and
Burpengary Libraries, Ipswich medieval fayre, Abbey Museums Medieval fayre,
Redcliffe's Scout Skillorama, Bomboora festival, Brookvale Medieval fayre,
Brisbane Medieval fayre, Caboolture Show, Brisbane Museum exhibition,
Viking Village Fayre, The Medieval Games, (which the club hosts), and
many other smaller appearances at schools and local council events.

Nationally, the club has been recognised through its first Internet web
site, http://www.paccon.com/viking/, 1997's October Australian Penthouse
three page article, and on Brisbane Extra Channel 9, with a very popular
segment on a full traditional Viking Wedding, which also ran in the New
Year summary on Brisbane Extra. In May 2000 Brisbane Extra also covered
the Medieval Games 2000. |

In
recognition of the local support to the Group, the Viking Club has raised
a genuine Runestone, which is the equivalant of a Viking monument. The
Rune Stone is at the South End of Pelican Park in Redcliffe. It was crafted
by a Runestone maker from Föllenslev -Denmark, Ove Birk Ejvindson,
in October 1997, and unveiled by the Mayor of Redcliffe. This unique authentic
replica is a natural historical focal point and tourist attraction, as
it appears to be the only Viking Runestone raised in this country.

The
future holds promises of a land lease with a Viking Village and Viking
Olympics using the sports true to that period.
Much
can be said about this club and all its energy, initiatives and strength.
It's a strength which Brisbane can count on. To truly understand the scope
of this club, you need to contact some of the club members or visit one
of the functions. The past as well as the future is in the hands of these
great people. For any questions, don't hesitate to contact us.
